It took a while but I finally got around to checking out my fellow Morehouse alum Fonzworth Bentley's "C.O.L.O.U.R.S." and I must say: It was worth the wait. I like listening to albums/mixtapes that lure me in to the point where I'm not tempted to skip through the tracks. "C.O.L.O.U.R.S." is definitely one of them officially added to my collection.
Living your life like it's your last, having fun, life, love, faith and politics are the main topics that stand out to me throughout the tracks. I'm big on content and I was pleased with what I heard. And then there's the music. Perfectly crafted from beginning to end from the drums to the chord progressions and instrumentation. Felt like I was back in high school and college when the Dungeon Family projects were out (Outkast, Goodie Mob, Slimm Cutta Calhoun, Cool Breeze, etc.). What surprised me the most was Mr. Bentley's lyrical ability. The cliche is true: You can't judge a book by its cover. Just because he was always known as P. Diddy's personal assistant does NOT mean that that's his only lot in life. That's why you can never give up on your dreams, no matter what your current position may be.
I honestly can't say which were my favorite tracks because I loved each and every one of them. But if I REALLY had to choose, it would have to be "Runaway", "Believe It", "Don't Speak", "Fire Side Chat", and "Everybody".
Overall, the mixtape is a masterpiece. The main thing that it accomplishes is further motivating artists like myself to think outside the box with music. In my case, it encourages me to keep doing what I do: Continue to go left field from the "Status Quo" (lol) of what's considered hot in the music and entertainment industry.
Mr. Bentley, as an advocate of Life Music, I salute you. :-)
Now, if you want to be inspired, I suggest you listen to and download C.O.L.O.U.R.S. RIGHT NOW! You'll thank me later.
